When Was The Romanov Dynasty Established In Russia?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Romanov dynasty was founded in 1613 when Mikhail Romanov became the Tsar of Russia. The Romanovs were originally a boyar family in Moscow; Anastasia Zakharyina daughter of Roman Zakharin-Yuriev from whom the name Romanov is derived married the Tsar Ivan IV (1530-1584) better known as Ivan the Terrible.

Anastasia's younger son Fyodor became the Tsar followed by his brother in law Boris Godunov who tried to eliminate several members of the Romanov family whom he saw as rival claimants to the throne. In 1606 the Godunov dynasty came to an end which resulted in the crown being offered to Mikhail Romanov the son of Feodor Nikitch Filaret a surviving member of the Romanov family.

Mikhail on his mother Kseniya Ivanovna accepted the crown and became the first monarch of the dynasty. One of the greatest monarchs to have emerged from the dynasty was Peter the Great (1672-1725); the dynasty ruled Russia from 1613 to 1762 followed by the Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov dynasty from 1762 to 1917.
