What Does Rhea Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Rhea as per Greek mythology referred to Zeus's mother. She was the daughter of Ouranos and Gaia, sister and consort of Kronos. She was also the mother of several other divinities like Poseidon, Hades, Hera, and Hestia. She was occasionally recognized with the Asiatic goddess Cybele. She was the deity for fertility in ancient Greek. Rhea actually meant 'she who flows'. In Roman mythology, she was Magna Mater deorum Idaea and identified with Ops.

She is always depicted as reclining on a chariot which is always drawn by two lions according to art and popular culture. This is a similarity that she shares with the Asiatic goddess Cybele. As per mythology her husband Cronus castrated her father and reigned as then along with Rhea took the throne as the King and Queen of the gods. The period of their reign is known as the golden age because everyone knew what was right and wrong and there was no need for any laws or rules.
