On modern cars the fuel pump is designed to do many different things that used to be done with separate parts:

      Pump fuel
      Regulate fuel pressure
      Fuel line check valve
      Filter fuel

Back in the old days if any of these individual parts needed work they could be fixed quickly, simply and cheaply.

But with all these functions built into our modern fuel pumps is is more likely that something will go bad.

To make things worse the fuel pumps are located inside the fuel tanks! The only way to get to the pump is to remove the fuel tank from the car, not an easy or cheap job to do!
