When Did Rap Music First Become Popular?

Rap music basically started in the early 1970s and its origins can be found in the African American and Latin street culture that was there in those days in New York and the areas around it. This is the music which created a new form of dancing and that is Hip-Hop.

Till the end of the 1970s, the music remained only in New York and surrounding areas but it gained popularity eventually and in the 1980s, it was popular in the entire US. After that it also became popular in other parts of the world and in 2000s, many songs with rap were rated on top charts for a long time. And this popularity is still there and Rap songs still get a place at the top charts. Today Rap is one of the best selling genres of music in the world.
