First you need a design program such as PhotoShop. Once you have set PhotoShop up and you have your image on the screen, select the section that you don't want to include in your image, using the magic wand or lasso tool. Click on 'edit' from the menu bar and then click on 'cut'.
Go to 'file', then 'export', then click on 'GIF89a Export'. A new window will appear. Adjust the settings to your liking. Once you click 'ok', name the image and it will be saved as a GIF file.
GIF images can be used for layouts on websites or as logos. The absence of the background means that you can make your images look effective. You could add different effects to the image using some of PhotoShop's features, though these should be used before you save the image as a GIF file.
