How Have Our Ideas About The Atom Changed Over Time?

    asked 2 years ago

    1 Answer

Theories about the atom have changed considerably over time. The first recorded theories about the atom originated in Ancient India by Buddhist, Jain and Hindu Philosophers in the sixth century BC. The first one among these to frame his thoughts systematically was Kanada. Indian philosophers basically felt that an atom could be an element among six others, and each of these would have up to twenty four different properties. In the fifth century BC, the Greek philosophers Leucippus and Democritus felt that all atoms consisted of the same material but came in unique shapes and sizes. Islamic atomists in the eleventh century developed theories that are a combination of both ancient Greek and Indian ideas on the atom.

The Father of Modern Atomic Theory John Dalton developed his atomic theory in the early years of the 19th century. His theory is that each element consists of atoms of a distinct type.
