Alzheimer's is a progressive disease. The early symptoms of Alzheimer's are confusion and forgetfulness both of which are associated with old age. The person may only suffer from a slight forget fullness in the beginning, but as the disease progresses, one starts to lose interest in his or her surroundings and loses the zest for life. Short-term memory is affected the most, and he or she thus has trouble in remembering recent events. By the time a patient is in the last stages of Alzheimer's, they cannot think clearly any more. They do not recognize familiar faces—not even of their own family members. They have speech problems and cannot perform even the most mundane tasks. They become aggressive and often wander off from home. By the last stages, they need total care at all times.
