Conte refers to a short story or novel. It deals with medieval subjects and stories. A conte is also a designation denoting Italian nobility. The English equivalent of this title, is 'count'. The female version is contessa. In French, it is 'Comte' and 'comtessa'.

A conte is largely a European title that portrays one to be of high nobility. Today, the rank of a conte would fall immediately after a marquess or a duke. The English label of Earl is the counterpart of a count, and is positioned higher than a viscount.

The Roman version of count was initially a domestic companion of the ruler. Beneath the Franks he was a local general and magistrate.

The counts were afterwards integrated into the feudal system. Some of them became subordinates to dukes, others fared better. The feudal lords were taken over by royal authority, thus leading to counts losing political power. Although their benefits as components of the nobility remained.
