While putting across your serve, you can spin the ball in hand before tossing it across to your opponent. In fact it is a common style of many professional players. It is allowed by management and referees and there is no harm in it.

This answer is incorrect. When serving in table tennis, the ball must be held in the palm of the hand and tossed into the air (about six inches). It is illegal to spin the ball prior to serving in table tennis.
