When Was The Peasants' Revolt In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Peasants Revolt took place in 1381.  It was an uprising against the universally detested 'poll tax' which had been introduced and was literally a tax on people.  It had been introduced by Richard ll following the Black Death which had killed almost one third to one half of the English population during the period 1348-49.
So, with a population massively depleted he was getting less in revenue from taxes and introduced three new taxes, one in 1377, one in 1379 and finally the poll tax in 1381.
For his subjects the taxes were too much to bear.
The revolt was pretty tame and led by two leaders who organised a mob to raid and plunder part of London.  It was not a widepsread revolt.  However, it was the first time that the peasants had actually stood up to their masters and as such sent shockwaves through the establishment.
