The word pestle is a noun and you can use the word for an elongated object the edge of which is rounded and the object can be used to crush things. The object is not usually used with any other object but you can find its use in a special kind of a bowl shaped object called mortar in which the thing you want to crush can be put and then it is pounded to get crushed.

The object is not in popular use these days as the advent of many electronic gadgets has made the it a bit obscure, but still you can find the object with old apothecary who use it to crush and mix medicines.

The word is probably come from the Middle English where the word was used as a synonymous term for crush.
