Who Had "One Foot In The Grave"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is the title of the popular 1990-97 sitcom, scripted by David Renwick and starring Richard Wilson as grumpy pensioner Victor Meldrew. His long-suffering wife is played by Annette Crosbie. Victor's temper gets even worse after 1992, when the couple move to a housing estate in retirement heaven Bournemouth. He starts a long-running feud with the new neighbours, Patrick (Angus Deayton) who returns all his insults with interest, and his patient wife Pippa (Janine Duvitski.) Otherwise Victor's wrath is directed at such universal targets as the Council, other drivers and household appliances and gadgets. His frequent cry of "I don't believe it!" became a catchphrase, and Victor himself a sort of Alf Garnett for the 90s – comically over-the-top, absurdly demanding of himself and others, but unlike Alf a fundamentally likeable character. The show often explored genuine emotion, but never veered into sentimentality; the characters were realistic and the scripts remained sharp throughout.
