Biodegradation is process observed in organic substances. The organic matter is generally a substance of plant or animal origin or any other substance obtained from living organisms. In this process, an organic substance undergoes decomposition or is broken down to simpler compounds. This process is carried out by other living organisms like bacteria. Biodegradation is of two types. First is aerobic biodegradation and the second is anaerobic biodegradation. Aerobic biodegradation is a biodegradation that is carried out in the presence of oxygen. This is carried by bacteria that require oxygen for their growth and thus for biodegradation.
The second biodegradation is carried out by anaerobic bacteria and is called anaerobic biodegradation. These bacteria do not use oxygen or use oxygen in very small amounts. They produce methane and biogas during decomposition.
