Which Developments Throughout History Have Resulted In The Development Of The Modern Machine Gun?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The development of the modern-day machine gun has been the result of a combination of a large range of innovations throughout history. As early as the first century, plans were being made for the creation of multi-shot weapons. The Greeks were making plans to develop a multi-shot arrow gun at this time. This was later followed with moderate success at attempts in designing a repeating crossbow in China.

These developments occurred around the second and third centuries. Later in history, further plans were formulated by Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400's. In the 1700's, advancements were made in the creation of firearms and attempts at increasing the rate of fire for these guns. These guns began showing traits indicative of modern-day machine guns.

However, success in the development of machine gun designs didn't appear until the middle of the nineteenth century. The invention of the Gatling gun featured a fairly high rate of fire and automatic loading. This gun still needed to be powered manually, however. This changed with future developments as newer designs at the time began to utilize the power from the recoil of the gun.

There were also some experiments done in the use of electric-powered motors for loading in these guns. The concept behind the development of the machine gun has definitely had a long and eventful history in reaching the point where it is at now. This long history is far from over for the machine gun. There will, for a certainty, continue to be more advancements in the development of this weapon for a long time to come.
