Which Flowers Should I Plant Next Year To Encourage Butterflies Into My Garden?

Answer Question

As a rule, butterflies like very sweet scented flowers which contain a lot of nectar.  Usually they prefer small, old fashioned varieties of flowers.  These can often be grouped together as 'Cottage Garden Flowers'.
The Buddleia plant is also known as the Butterfly Bush, simply because it is so popular with butterflies, so planting a Buddleia is sure to attract some butterflies.
Lavender and Honeysuckle (Lonicera) are also great butterfly favourites.  However, these will take some time to establish and may not flower well in the first year of planting.  (They are best planted in early spring, if they are to flower well for the summer).
In the meantime you could try planting some annuals.   Sweet William, wallflower and marigolds are all good sources of nourishment for butterflies and can be grown without too much effort.  The herbs thyme and marjoram are also good to grow.  And butterflies love thistles, so this is a good excuse not to weed too vigourously !
