Many people are being forced to take whatever they can because of the economy. I know many who spend much of their time away from family and friends, and their career goal seems further and further from their grasp. The only advice I can give is to study hard and learn well. Put every penny away you can. Hopefully you'll able to afford a college education and the chance of a career that you choose, not one chosen for you out of need.
