Cellular phones are special mobile telephones that do not need hookups to standard phone outlets n order to work. They can put two people into communication with each other almost anywhere, even if the parties are in motion. Cellular phones, which use radio waves, operate by keeping in contact with cellular antennae. these antennae, which resemble tall, metal telephone poles, are strategically placed throughout a calling area. Calling areas are divided into zones measuring ten miles wide or so, called cells, each with its own antenna.
The antennae perform two essential functions 1) they enable a moving, cellular phone to transmit and receive signals without interruption by passing signals off to antennae in contiguous cells into which the phones are moving, and (2) they provide an interface with the regular public phone network via a switching office. Cellular phone has increased from 1.6 million users to 66.5 million users in the last decade, and is expected to reach over 100 million users by the year 2002. Currently, those who most benefit from the cellular phone boom are people who need to maintain constant contact with the office or clients but must be on the move as well such as a busy executive, salesperson, truck driver or real estate agent. Cellular phones that enable busy families and teenagers to keep in touch are also becoming more popular.
