Who Were The First People To Sail All Around The World?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Initially it was not known that the Pacific ocean is much greater in size as compared to the Atlantic ocean.  After its discovery by Ferdinand Magellan and his crew of 250 men and his fleet of five ships, it was generally believed that the Pacific ocean was around the size of the Atlantic ocean.  Under this misconception when Magellan and his men set out to sail the Pacific ocean, they soon realized that they had underestimated the size of the Pacific ocean as their food supplies did not seem enough to sail the entire Pacific ocean to reach any piece of land.

Gradually their food supplies ended and they survived on rats for food.  Their condition worsened with every passing day and four of the ships were damaged and destroyed.  Moreover many sailors died as well along with Ferdinand Magellan, who died in a battle in the Phillipines.  This continued for a period of three years until only eighteen men out of the 250 men were left alive.  The eighteen men who survived the voyage were the first ever men to travel all around the world.
