NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is actually an agency of the United States Government and not run by private sector people.
NASA was established in the year 1958 through a state act called National Aeronautics and Space act. Apart from Space Program of United States, it also looks after the long term civilian and military aerospace research. It has its head quarters in Washington D.C.
