What Does Panda Mean In English?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The most common definition of the word panda is two species of animals, namely the giant panda and the lesser panda. The giant panda is a large herbivorous mammal which is black and white in colour. It is native to the bamboo forests of China and Tibet.

The giant panda is considered to be a member of the same family to which bears belong, but is actually a member of a separate family known as the family Ailuropodidae. It is scientifically known as Ailuropoda melanoleuca, and its name is literally translated into English as black and white cat foot.

On the other hand, the lesser panda is an Old World creature that resembles a raccoon. It is reddish brown in colour. It is considered to be unrelated to the giant pandas. It is a carnivorous animal. It is scientifically known as Ailurus fulgens, which is a Latin word. The English translation of its scientific name is fire-coloured cat.
