Pedro de Sousa Holstein, also known as the Duke of Palmela,  was the first prime minister of Portugal. Born in 1781, he served as prime minister-- once Portugal became a constitutional monarchy-- from 1834 to 1835, as well as for a few months in 1846. He was succeeded by the Count of Linhares in 1835 and by the Duke of Saldanha in 1846.

Prior to serving as prime minister, Pedro de Sousa Holstein was a diplomat and military officer. He held a number of government positions, including ambassador, foreign minister and minister of state. De Sousa Holstein died in Lisbon, in 1850.

In Portugal, the prime minister serves as the head of government and can remain in power for an unlimited number of terms. Like in a number of other European parliamentary systems, the prime minister of Portugal is currently appointed by the republic's president, based on the results of general elections. It is customary for the leader of the largest party to also serve as the prime minister.
