When Was The NHS Created?

The National Health Service was formed in 1948, under Clement Attlee's Labour government, and is based on the theory that all citizens have access to healthcare regardless of wealth and on the basis of need.
It is funded by the taxpayer, using funds allocated by the government and managed, overall, by the Department of Health.
It was guaranteed that all patients could receive free, direct point of care, but charges were given to prescriptions and dental treatments soon after.
The original structure of the NHS contained three areas: hospital services, primary care (GP's), and community services (maternity, health-visitors and ambulance services).
Due to the development of medicines, equipment and a changing population, there are significant demands on the NHS which has facilitated many changes in its structure over the last fifty years. There are many challenges to all concerned, not least the financial pressures which continue to be a topic of much debate, as to where and who funds are allocated.
