You are probably referring to the Philippine Islands Dog which is indigenous to this island group. About the size of a Bull Terrier, the Philippine Islands Dog makes for a good companion and guard dog.

Unfortunately for the breed, the natives of Luzon for centuries considered its flesh a delicacy. Roasted and stuffed with rice and spices, the Philippine Dog was a favourite titbit at the feast.

This custom is now officially frowned upon but eating dog undoubtedly continues to this day, especially in rural hill settlements.

No pedigrees are kept for the breed. Despite being popular with Americans and not officially recognised by the American Kennel Club, Philippine Islands Dog are generally bred to a type of decent quality in most places where it has a following.

The Philippine Islands Dog usually attains a height of 21 inches and weighs around 45 to 50 pounds. The coat is short and smooth, and tan, pied, fawn, white, tan and white, or brindle in colour.

In the days of Imperial China, the Chow was breed to be eaten. This is also the origin of the Chinese dish Chow Mein.
