    • I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings:

    This is Angelou's initial work of literature. It is, published in 1969, a biography. Angelou's troublesome years encouraged her to write down this book. It reflects the core of her effort to the limitations that were put upon her in an aggressive environment. Angelou wrote with a twist of poetic descriptions along with a touch of practicality. The great black poet's poem "Sympathy" is used as the title of this book. The work shows an urge towards transcendence.


    • Gather Together in My Name

    This book is published in 1974. It moves around the Angelou and her brother's when they go away from their grandmother. In the book she puts pen to paper about an affair at a restaurant with a customer and her experience with drugs.

    • The Heart of a Woman
    This is the title of fourth novel and is taken from a poem written by Georgia Douglas Johnson. Once more she is looking for her place and identity. This book match with her first novel has a some what same emotional depth. Through this period, she became more dedicated to her work and was encouraged by her friend.

    Other novels are "Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas" and All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes"

    Maya Angelou has comprises all of her autobiographies in one book.
