Pop Art emerged in Britain and the United States around the 1950s. It ran parallel to, and was informed by, the development of mass culture and the growing ubiquity of ephemeral objects, as illustrated so clearly by Warhol's Cambell's Soup.
In fact, Andy Warhol is, of course, one of the best-known of the pop artists. His production line 'Factory' seemed to sum up the mechanised, almost automated process of creating these works, which often seemed to have no real connection to the artist. Many employed studio workers to put together their pieces for them, thus further distancing themselves from the work. Artists such as Roy Lichtenstein drew on popular culture, particularly comic books, for inspiration, creating vast, highly stylised canvases which often made heavy use of irony. Others gained less notoriety but were still highly prolific, in particular Blake, Thiebaud, Murakami, Johns and Escobar. While varied, the work of all of these artists shares certain common characteristics, and formed the work of a movement which has been immensely influential across the Western hemisphere.

There are a number of contemporary artists who would also be considered 'pop artists' and, therefore, fall into the Pop Art Era (depending on how far you wanted to extend the years). 3d pop art, in particular, is a prevalent modern manifestation of the Pop Art Era and involves very innovative and intricate artistic techniques for its production.
