Where Does The Kalahari Desert Extend To?

The Kalahari Desert is an arid region lying in southern Africa; the desert lies mainly in the Republic of Botswana and extends in to the eastern parts of Namibia and northern parts of the Republic of South Africa. The desert covers an area covering about 900,000 sq km (347,400 sq miles) and lies in the Kalahari basin an extensive low lying area covering much of southern and south western Africa.

The Okavango or Boteti River as it is generally known flows through the north western part of the desert where it has formed a delta; the river is the only source of perennial water in the area. The sands of the Kalahari Desert are reddish brown in color; some parts of the desert receive moderate rainfall which has given rise to woodlands and animal life in the region leading many geologists to classify it as an arid savanna region rather than a desert. The Kalahari is the home of the Bushmen tribes known as 'San' who in the past lived throughout southern Africa.
