Who Were The Boer's?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word Boer is a Dutch and Afrikaans term which means farmer. It refers to the descendants of the pastoralists belonging to the Eastern Cape frontier which is in South Africa. It also denotes those who had left the Cape Colony and opted to settle in Transvaal, the Orange Free State and to a lesser extent Natal. These settlers had mainly moved to avoid the British empires rule in the Cape and also the continuous border wars that took place on the eastern frontier.

The founders belonging to Cape Province were the ones who had undertaken the Great Trek and were called Voortrekkers. They were mainly of Dutch, German and French origin. There were two wars fought between the Boers and the British Empire. Later the term "Boers" came to refer to many white Afrikaans-speaking people, especially those who had "conservative" political views and were of trekker descent.
