What Is The New World?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The New World is a term that was used during the fifteenth century by the then Europeans to describe the Americas. The Americas was referred to as the New World as it was beyond the geographical knowledge of the then cartographers. They knew of Africa, Asia and Australia, but what on earth was this? Another land mass, so if the rest of the world was old knowledge this had to be known as "The New World".

Christopher Columbus the brilliant explorer, who planned his new route to India, miscalculated the distance and landed a third of the distance on an island and thought that he had finally reached India (as per his expert calculations) is referred to as the man who discovered the "New World".

There was also a movie called the "New World" that was released in 2005 starring Colin Farrell as Captain Smith.
