A republic is a country that has no royal head of state. For example: America and China are republics because they have a president and the presidents are the head of state. Where as a country like Australia or Canada is not. Those two countries are part of a Commonwealth governed by the Crown (Queen Elizabeth II). Denmark is another Commonwealth like country as they have a royal family that oversees the running of a country. Despite the fact that the roles of the Royal family have changed, they still have a strong part in politics but less to do with the running of the country. Every year the Queen must open parliment for the country of Britain and the same with the King for Denmark.
