As of January 2, 2009, the oldest living person is Gertrude Baines of USA. She was born on April 6, 1894 and is 114 years old. Before she died on January 2, 2009, the oldest person was a Portuguese woman, Maria de Jesus. She died at the age of 115 years.
The person to have held the title for the longest verified lifespan is Jeanne Calment who lived for 122 years and 164 days (February 21, 1875 - August 4, 1997). She used to live in Arles, France.

So, let's come back to the current oldest living person, Gertrude Baines. Baines is Afro American and lives in the Western Convalescent Home, Jefferson Park, Los Angeles. Before that she used to live alone (in fact, till the age of 105).
She was born in Shellman, Georgia to Jordan and Amelia (Daniel) Baines. She married Sam Conly and had a daughter, Annabelle with him in 1909. Annabelle died of typhoid fever when she was only 18.
