Brian Clough begain his management career with Hartlepool United in the season England won the world cup; the ninteen sixty five, sixty six season.

Clough took over the stuggling North East outfit while the club were languishing in the lower reaches of Englands fourth division.  In a relatively unremarkable first season of club management, Clough's main achievement was preventing the club from being relegated out of the fourth division and into obscurity.

In that first season, Clough was in charge for thirty three matches, winning only thirteen, drawing six and losing fourteen.  The season ended with Hartlepool scoring forty eight league goals, having conceded forty nine, fininshing with thirty two points.

The following season (sixty six, sixty seven), the club faired a little better, winning twenty two of thier forty six matches, losing seventeen and drawing the remaining seven, eventually finishing in a respectable eight position.  This was at a time, when the league still operated a two points for a win system.
