The American country song "Green Green Grass of Home" was written by Curly Putman Jr.  in 1965. A number of country singers performed the song, including Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Porter Wagoner, Stompin' Tom Conners and Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis was actually the first to record the song in 1966, but it was Tom Jones who truly popularized it.

Curly Putman was born in Alabama in 1930 and "Green Green Grass of Home" was his first major song. Putman quickly earned a reputation as a prominent Nashville songwriter and several of his later songs made it to the top of the charts, including "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" in 1968, "Blood Red And Going Down" in 1973 and "Baby I'll Be Coming Back For More" in 1980.

In "Green Green Grass of Home" the narrator recounts the story of his return home to a small town after having been away for an extended period of time. The listener can detect a strong sense of nostalgia in the song and this ends up making a lot of sense when, towards the end, it turns out that the narrator is actually a prisoner sitting on deathrow dreaming about his home town and hoping to see it again after his execution.
