What Are Some Key Opera Terms?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sure, but let's start with an opera joke:

Why do opera singers have a problem getting into their houses?
Because they never know what key to use and they can't come in unless someone tells them when!

    Okay, some Opera terms:

Aria:  Italian for Air - a large song when a character reveals their thoughts and feelings (and generally the singer shows off their voice)

Colour:  The word used for the characteristics of the singer's voice, there are two basic colours, lyric which means sweet and dramatic which means very strong.

Diva: literally Italian for Goddess, a demanding female opera singer

Falsetto:  The highest part of a man's voice, up high like a woman's voice

Libretto: Little book - the script

Soprano: the female voice range with the highest notes (and the best wages)

Trouser Role: a male part played by a female singer

Verismo:  A gritty, realistic type of opera.
