How Did Mike Tyson Get Into Professional Boxing?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Mike Tyson's talent was spotted at school by Bobby Stewart, a professional boxer who went on to teach Tyson the basics. Stewart claims that even at 13 Tyson packed a punch capable of bringing him to his knees. Stewart introduced Tyson to Brooklyn based manager and trainer Cus D'Amato who had managed celebrated boxers such as Floyd Patterson. In 1985 D'Amato steered Tyson into his first professional boxing bout with Hector Mercedes. Tyson knocked Mercedes out in the first round. D'Amato worked with him in pursuit of the heavyweight championship of the world title. In his first year of professional fighting Tyson notched up 15 victories out of 15 bouts, all achieved by knockouts. After a total of 27 consecutive wins Tyson fought Trevor Berbick for the World Boxing Council's Heavyweight Title. It took him just six minutes to demolish Berbick. AT the tender age of 20, on 22nd November 1986, Mike Tyson became the world heavyweight champion.
