    Barnes and Noble Inc is an American retailer which specialises in books. It is the largest specialty retailer in the United States, with many different chains including Bookstar, Bookstop and B.Dalton Booksellers. Many of the Barnes and Noble stores sell books, games, DVDs, music, magazines and newspapers.

    The first bookstore was set up by William, the son of Charles M. Barnes, in 1917, in partnership with G. Clifford Noble. Barnes and Noble publishes many of the books sold, and from 1992 to 2003, many  classic books were sold under the imprint Barnes and Noble Classics Collection. 63 books were included in the Classics Collection in total. Among these classics were 'Dracula', 'Crime and Punishment', 'Great Expectations' and 'Sense and Sensibility'.

    Barnes and Noble bookstores are well known for their cafes, each of which sell Starbucks products and oher well known products.
