Insufficient oxygen is carried to the organs and to the brain, leading to unconsciousness and death.

The blood carries oxygen to all of the organs. When blood cannot reach the organs, they are deprived of oxygen and they shut down. Respiratory arrest follows, then cardiac arrest. If CPR is not initiated, then brain cells die.
