Piano is one of the most popular musical instruments of today. The actual name for a piano is the pianoforte which actually means 'soft-strong'. Today's modern piano was an evolution from an instrument called the harpsichord. It was developed around the year 1720, and the person who developed it was someone by the name of Bartolomeo Cristofori of the city of Padua in Italy. The main thing about this instrument is that it was capable of making sounds with different volumes. It could make a range of sounds from very soft and delicate sounds called the pianissimo to strong and loud sounds called fortissimo.

Although today's piano is quite a complex instrument, the initial ones were relatively simple and called a "monochord". The monochord had only one string with the scales marked on the box on which it was mounted. Sound was produces by plucking of this string. After this the piano went through a series of metamorphosis until the17th century saw the making of the Harpsichord that resembled the grand piano quite a bit.

Bartolommeo Christofori was the first to add the hammers for sound production and this is what made the piano stand apart from other stringed instruments and also quite unique.
