Do Watermelons Taste Different?
Is it just me or have we given up the taste for the convenience of the seedless watermelon? Seems the old watermelon packed with seeds tasted lots better than the current ones.

I think you may be right. We have tended to buy only seedless for several years.. And then recently I got one with seeds... MUCH sweeter.
Aren't seedless watermelons really just immature melons which happen to turn red inside while still immature? After all, they must develop seeds sometime, or how would they reproduce?

The seedless examples which we're stuck with in this part of the country have small soft seeds which you hardly notice when eating them.
Same here, which is part of what makes me think they are simply immature melons. If so, that may explain them having less flavor.
I don't know if it is related to seeds/seedless, but my memory is that melons and produce had richer taste in years past. Perhaps it is conjecture, but I believe the fruits in past were often organically cultivated (long before the term became popular) and allowed time to properly ripen before harvest, and that perhaps our memories of youth (remembering the good times) has something also to do with our recollections.

Would have to agree with you on the past having organically produced produce. The taste stemming from our recollections could also be a good point but in my case I think age and the degradation which comes from it might be affecting my taste. I know recent chemotherapy has destroyed my taste and hasn't done my mind any favors, either.
Different types of Watermelons taste different, you will discover that the one you consider to have a good taste, somebody probably would think that is the worst simply because taste is subjective. However traditionally the old watermelon packed with seeds is known for its good taste. Good luck.

Thanks for the answer, just that it seems the watermelons stuffed with seeds were a deeper red and much sweeter than the seedless of today.

When I was a kid that's all we had were seeded and I always loved watermelon but couldn't stand the seeds.
Half the time i'd be spitting out half the watermelon with the seeds so it wasn't as enjoyable.
I was jumping for joy when I discovered seedless.
If the watermelon is a good one, the sweetness to me is the same not to mention, I can eat it until I turn green without having to waste almost the whole thing.

Too bad we're already married to others as I could see us with a couple of cans of whipped cream, a big container of margarine, and a watermelon............................
We have grown both types of watermelons in our garden. I would say that the ones with seeds do taste better to me. When picking out a watermelon you want to thump on it to see if it's ripe. A flat sound and it isn't ripe. A little bit of a hollow sound and it's ripe. Peace

Yes, and not just water melon tastes different, lots vegetable and fruits are tasting different. The tastes all seem te be less intensive as old days, i guess. Techonolgy do make apples sweeter, but ruin the taste...

Some years back the growers in Washington state set out to make the red delicious apple more appealing looking. They succeeded in the appearance yet ruined the taste almost destroying their market.

Tigs, Are you of the whipped cream type, too? Or are you saying that a watermelon would be good bait?
I prefer the seedless for obvious reasons, but the taste is the same to me with/without seeds. I like a slightly sour taste to the melon. When they are too sweet, sometimes they are mushy. And I like salt on mine.

Dk, have to have salt on all melons; the board of directors questions my sanity continually in this matter, but I stand my ground!
yes, indeedy, salt on the melons! never use to like salt until one day I ate some of my husbands melon with salt on it. WOW! tasted great!
There is definitely a difference in taste, My kids always beg me to buy seedless. After many weak tasting seedless ones, I finally bought one of each and made them do a blind taste test and the results were unanimous.we haven't bought a seedless one since.
