A tranquiliser is basically a sedative. It is the stuff that depresses the central nervous system which results in calmness, relaxation, slow breathing, slurred speech, poor judgment etc. If consumed in high doses or abused they may result in unconsciousness and later death.

Tranquilisers or sedatives are often given to patients by doctors and nurses to make the patient unconscious to carry through painful or nervousness related procedure. Patients in intensive care unit are always kept under the influence of sedatives.

All sorts of sedatives can cause addiction and psychological dependency if taken continuously over a regular period of time. Patients who have been kept on regular doses of sedatives, when taken off face problems like insomnia, restlessness, withdrawal and anxiety. When patients become mentally dependent on sedatives they feel they can't to with out them even though there is no physical need.
