There are two forms of meningitis. Viral and Bacterial.
Meningitis is a medical term for meninges-the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, and itis-the swelling of. It means that the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord are swollen due to infection, injury, or certain drugs.
Meningitis symptoms are some or all of the following: Headache, stiffness of the neck, fever, confusion, photophobia (light causes intense eye pain and the person will try to avoid it), phonophobia (sounds cause intense pain and the person will try to avoid it), nausea, rash, irritability, and drowsiness.
The only way to determine if someone has meningitis is to do an LP or a Lumbar Puncture or a spinal tap. (Both the same thing, just a different name) The LP is when they force you into a fetal position to space out the discs in your spine so the needle can get in between them to the spinal cord where they collect a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This is the fluid that circulates around your brain and spine. It is examined in a lab. If you have meningitis they will give you medications depending on which type you have.
The bacterial version of meningitis is the one that is the worst since it can cause long-term damage sich as deafness, epilepsy, hydrocephalus and cognitive deficits (brain damage).
