What Is Antonym Of VILIFICATION?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

I think that the antonyms of vilification are PRAISE, ACCLAIM, WORSHIP etc.

When someone is vilified they are portrayed as being criminal, evil and abusive.

The opposite of that would be to praise or compliment the person.

The most precise antonym is COMMENDATION. If vilification means defaming or speaking evil of someone, then commendation is praising or speaking well of them. (The verb to vilify comes from the Latin vilificare, to cheapen or make base. The verb commend comes from mandare, to trust.)

However, in modern usage we tend to use the word vilification to imply a particularly heated, angry criticism ("The politician was vilified in the press for his comments on education.") In this case, PRAISE is also a possible antonym; it is very close in meaning to commendation, but implies greater warmth or enthusiasm ("I have nothing but praise for his dedication.") The noun and the verb are the same ("He was praised for his dedication.")

The word praise comes from the Old French preisier, meaning "to price, price or praise."
