Can You Give The Main Reasons For The Partition Of Bengal In 1905?

Answer Question

Bengal was the largest of all provinces of India. At the end of 19th century, it included Western Bengal with the population of 54 million (42 million Hindus and 12 million Muslims) and East Bengal and Assam with a population of about 30 million (18 million Muslims and 12 million Hindus). This was a very huge area to govern as a single unit (there were about ten times the people in whole of the Britain at that time)

The British administrators appealed that Bengal was a huge area to govern as a single body and it shall be more efficient to govern it as smaller parts. So in 1903, Lord Curzon demanded that Bengal should be partitioned in 2 parts. The East Bengal would include Assam and the three districts that used to be the part of Western Bengal (i.e. Dhaka, Chitagong and Mymansingh.).

It was two years before the partition was put into effect but in 1905 the British partitioned Bengal as Curzon had suggested. The Muslims were delighted with the partition as there position was improved overnight but the Hindus were raged as they thought there so-called `HINDU THREAT` shall be weakened.
