In electronics, they're circuits which carry Direct Current rather than Alternating Current. I always mentally compared the two to people dancing in a circle. In the manner of DC, they all go the same direction, around and around the circle. In the manner of AC, they'd bump or step right, then bump or step, left, over and over and over and stay pretty much right were they were in the beginning.
