Milieu refers to the entirety of the surrounding state and environmental conditions that influence one's growth or development. It refers to one's ambience or one's environmental surroundings. It is the atmosphere or climate one is situated in.

It is derived from the French word meaning 'middle place'. It is the totality of your surrounding or the setting you are in.

Milieu may refer to a social environment as well. A social environment is the main influence of a collection of individuals and their contributing factors to the surroundings. The communication here is on a frequent basis as all parties hail from similar cultural and socio-economic classes.

Social environment is basically nature's base for the development of the organism, including humans. There may be different environments like educational environments, that is, students studying in the same college.
