Is The Bite Of A Gila Monster Fatal To Humans?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is the largest -- 18-24 inches -- lizard in the U.S. Rattlesnakes and Gila monsters are the only venomous reptiles in the Southwest.
While not aggressive, they are very wary, perfectly camouflaged, and spend most of their time underground. Therefore, few people see them.
Gila monsters move slowly to catch juvenile rodents, rabbits, and nestlings. Contrary to their depiction in Hollywood Westerns, they monsters rarely bite humans, and then only if stupid people handle them.
Gila monsters have a neurotoxic venom secreted from its molars, unlike a rattler with poison in its fangs. For this reason, Gila monsters must bite prey hard, and they are very difficult to dislodge from one's hand. While the bite is not fatal, it is a medical emergency and causes great pain and nausea.
