When Are Meteors Found?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Meteors are, in the main, just small particles of dust and small rocks from space which enter Earths atmosphere as we progress around the sun. Mostly they just burn up in the atmosphere (shooting stars) but a few are large enough to survive all the way and make landfall. At this point, they are then termed METEORITES.

At several (predictable) points throughout the year, Earth's orbit coincides with those of some comets which have left debris in their wake as the make their passage around the sun. This higher than usual volume of debris enters the atmosphere over a period of days or even weeks to produce METEOR SHOWERS. These showers are named after the constellation from which they appear to originate
