Dugouts was a term used for area usually sited close to the trench line often within or below the trench wall which were used as a form of underground shelter for both troops and officers.  Occupants of dugouts would eat their meals, arrange meetings and often make their bed there.

World war one was one where both sides dug in, meaning they dug trenches to protect themselves, and this is where they lived and fought.
