The origin is Asian in general. It has been grown throughout Asia for millennia, china and India having the most plantations due to climate and topography. Tea is then "withered" or dried for a period, then it is oxidized for a while by exposing it to air, then it is baked, pan fried, or roasted. The process is how color and flavor are controlled, much like the roast on a coffee. Almost all real teas are only the first few leaves from a tea tree each spring.

I think you have been initially unfairly rated poor for your answer by someone creating mischief here. But you answer is quite good and you deserve 5 stars for it. And so have this from me, who values your answer.

This is a very good guess, because the first history of tea, which is called "Cha Ching", was written by a China-man around 800 AD. It tells that in China in 793 AD the drinking of tea had become quite popular that in fact a tax was levied on it.
But then tea popularity grew very fast, first Japan and then Europe, and so forth.  We know that in 729 AD  Emperor Shomu of Japan invited 100 Buddhist monks to take tea in his palace.

There are many different types of tea, from all over the world, and it really can't be traced to any one origin.
