    Canada is a country with a rich sporting heritage. Ice hockey and lacrosse are the two national sports of Canada. Six of the teams in the 30-team National Hockey League (NHL), the premier professional ice hockey league, are Canadian franchises. These are the Calgary Flames, the Edmonton Oilers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks.

    Ice hockey is the official national winter sport and lacrosse is the official national summer sport of Canada. Other sports played in Canada are curling, Canadian football, baseball, basketball, soccer (also known as association football), open-wheel auto racing, stock car auto racing, softball, golf, tennis, swimming, on-road cycling, off-road cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, alpine skiing, volleyball, rugby union, Australian Rules Football, professional wrestling, horse racing, rodeo, figure skating, boxing, triathlon, track and field events and cricket.

    Canada has played host to two Olympic Games. Montreal hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1976 and Calgary was the venue for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.
