What Is Special About The American Military Honour, The Purple Heart?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Different from all other US military decorations (and indeed, those of most other nations), the Purple Heart is awarded automatically, as long as the serving soldier meets specific and strictly spelled out criteria.  With most military medals, the service-person has to be nominated or recommended, but the Purple Heart is a must-be-assigned kind of thing, as long as certain conditions are met.

The soldier must be injured (or killed) in enemy-related conflict.  This can even include from "friendly fire" , as long as the intention of the friendly fire was to attack the enemy.  Also, the wounds must be attended, required treatement from and recorded by a medical officer.  Terrorist attacks count as enemy action, too.

Injuries which arise post-conflict, or which did not require medical attention at the time of battle, do not qualify.  Injury from retreat, taking cover, doing ordinary duties (even if on a mission related to an enemy), environmental conditions (such as frostbite) or arising from negligence of duty do not count.
